Understanding IV drip therapy

IV therapy delivers fluids, vitamins and minerals directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system for faster, more complete absorption than oral supplements. This can be relevant where oral absorption is limited, where higher doses are needed, or for acute rehydration.

It isn’t a substitute for a balanced diet or routine bloodwork, and isn’t suitable for everyone. Your consultation will confirm whether IV therapy is appropriate for you, and your clinician may suggest blood testing first to identify what your body actually needs.

How do IV Drips Work?

IV therapy delivers essential nutrients directly into the bloodstream for rapid and complete absorption, bypassing the digestive system to ensure maximum benefit. It’s part of a proactive approach to health and longevity. Supporting recovery, performance and long-term balance.

Effect Doctors takes a personalised approach to wellness, offering comprehensive blood testing to help identify individual nutrient needs. These insights inform tailored IV formulations designed to restore, rebalance and optimise wellbeing. Each treatment is created by a qualified doctor and administered by a highly trained nurse, ensuring the highest standards of safety and care.

Registered and regulated in London

Effect Doctors is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC Location ID: 1-13938483238). Every IV drip is prescribed following a medical consultation and administered by a GMC-registered doctor or an NMC-registered nurse. The service was founded by NHS-trained anaesthetic doctors, experienced in intravenous fluid and drug administration, alongside a wider clinical team including GPs, functional medicine doctors and emergency medicine doctors.

Before every treatment:

  • A free consultation reviews your medical history and suitability
  • Your prescribing clinician confirms the formulation is appropriate for you
  • Treatment is administered in a clinical setting or your home/hotel by a qualified nurse or doctor, monitored throughout

Frequently Asked Questions

Some frequently asked questions about IV Drip Therapy

Is IV therapy safe?

All treatments are prescribed by GMC-registered doctors and administered by NMC-registered nurses or paramedics, following a medical consultation to confirm suitability.

Who shouldn't have IV therapy?

IV drips aren’t suitable for everyone. Your consultation screens for factors such as pregnancy, certain heart or kidney conditions, and interactions with existing medication. Always disclose pre-existing conditions before treatment.

Who prescribes and administers my IV drip?

Every treatment is prescribed by a GMC-registered doctor following consultation and administered by that doctor or an NMC-registered nurse.

How quickly will I feel the effects?

Most people feel a difference within a few hours — more energy, better focus or improved hydration. Results vary depending on your individual health and the type of drip.

How often should I have it?

This depends on your goals and is best confirmed in consultation — some people benefit from weekly treatment, others monthly.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are uncommon. Some people feel light nausea or warmth if the drip runs too quickly; this is managed by our team of nurses adjusting the infusion rate.

How long does an IV drip take?

Most IV drips take between 30 and 60 minutes to administer, depending on the formulation and your individual needs. Before your treatment begins, our medical team will carry out a consultation to ensure everything is tailored to you.

If you are looking for a quick IV drip, we also offer the Express Mini IV Drip. With a smaller electrolyte IV solution of just 100ml, the IV infusion is considerably quicker to administer, usually less than 30 minutes.

What should I eat before an IV drip?

There’s no special diet required before most IV drips, though eating a light meal beforehand can help if you’re prone to light-headedness. Our team will advise on any specific preparation if your chosen drip requires it.

Is IV therapy regulated?

Yes. Effect Doctors is registered with the Care Quality Commission and regulated under the Health and Social Care Act 2008 for treatment of disease, disorder or injury, and diagnostic and screening procedures.
