What Is Meningitis B?

Meningitis is a serious infection of the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord, often caused by bacteria.

The MenB strain can progress rapidly and, in severe cases, can lead to:

  • Sepsis (blood poisoning)

  • Long-term complications

  • Death in approximately 1 in 10 cases

Although rare, it is medical emergency-level serious and requires urgent treatment.

Symptoms to Watch For

Early symptoms can be subtle and easily mistaken for flu or exhaustion. They may include:

  • Fever

  • Severe headache

  • Neck stiffness

  • Vomiting

  • Sensitivity to light

  • Rash that does not fade under pressure

As the illness progresses, symptoms can worsen quickly.

Why Vaccination Matters Now

The current outbreak has highlighted a key issue:

Many teenagers and adults are not protected against MenB

The MenB vaccine has only been routinely offered to infants in the UK since 2015, meaning:

  • Most people over the age of 10 have not received it

  • Young adults (especially students) may be at higher risk

MenB spreads through close contact, such as:

  • Sharing drinks

  • Kissing

  • Living in close quarters (e.g. university accommodation)

Private Meningitis B Vaccination at Effect Doctors

Due to increased demand, Effect Doctors has secured a limited supply of the MenB vaccine.

Our service includes:

  • Doctor-led clinical assessment

  • Safe, regulated vaccine administration

  • Clear eligibility guidance

  • Follow-up support if required

This is particularly relevant for:

  • University students

  • Young adults

  • Parents seeking protection for older children

  • Individuals who were not vaccinated in childhood

About the MenB vaccine

Bexsero®️ is a vaccine that protects against meningococcal group B (MenB) bacteria, a serious cause of meningitis and septicaemia that can progress rapidly and become life-threatening.

In individuals aged over 2 years, including adolescents and adults, the vaccine is given as a two-dose course, with the second dose administered at least 1 month after the first.

This two-dose schedule is required to generate a strong and sustained immune response, as a single dose provides only limited protection. Full immunity develops after completion of the course, typically within a couple of weeks following the second injection. Bexsero is a non-live vaccine and is well tolerated, making it suitable for a wide range of patients, including those seeking private vaccination for travel, university, or increased personal protection.
