What is a Rapid Ferritin Test?

The Rapid Ferritin test is a test that takes only 15 minutes and involves a drop of blood from a finger prick, and we analyse this straight away. You can then identify your ferritin levels, an important part of determining whether you have an iron deficiency. Your results will be reviewed by one of our Doctors expert in treating iron deficiency, and they will determine if you would benefit from IV iron supplementation.

One of the solutions to an iron deficiency is an IV iron infusion. We can only offer this to our patients if a low iron level is demonstrated by a blood test. If you have a recent relevant blood test or a referral from another Doctor then we will not need to take another one.

Who May Be at Risk of Iron Deficiency?

Iron deficiency is a common condition that can develop for a number of reasons, including blood loss, inadequate dietary intake, or issues affecting the body’s ability to absorb iron. Women with heavy menstrual periods are particularly at risk, alongside individuals with long-term health conditions, digestive disorders, or diets low in iron-rich foods.

Because iron plays an important role in energy production, cognitive function and overall wellbeing, low iron levels can impact your physical, mental and emotional health. In the UK, iron deficiency is especially common among women, with an estimated 30% potentially benefiting from iron supplementation and around 10% experiencing severe iron deficiency.

Symptoms of Iron Deficiency Include

Lack of energy
Hair loss
Weakness
Pale skin
Shortness of breath
Dizziness
Headaches
Brittle nails
Low mood and difficulty concentrating

It could be due to an iron deficiency. This is a condition where the body lacks enough iron, a vital mineral needed to produce haemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. Without enough iron, the body can’t make enough healthy red blood cells, which leads to reduced oxygen delivery to tissues. This can cause all of the symptoms above.

Indications for Iron Infusions

You may be suitable for IV iron if:

Your haemoglobin is below 90, and both MCV and MCH are low
Your ferritin level is below 30

We may also recommend IV iron if:

You haven’t improved with oral iron supplements
Your ferritin is between 30–100, and at least two of the following apply:
- You’re experiencing symptoms of iron deficiency
- Your TSAT (transferrin saturation) is below 20%
- Your CRP (an inflammation marker) is above 5

Couldn’t recommend effect doctors enough! We tested my ferritin and it was 8! I have really struggled with hair loss and fatigue. The test was super quick and easy as I got my results after 15 mins.
