G6PD Blood Test - Why It's Important

If you have a deficiency in the G6PD enzyme, it can be unsafe to administer doses of Vitamin C above 10g. The prevalence of G6PD deficiency varies depending on your race, with people of African and Mediterranean descent experiencing a prevalence of 1 in 100.

To ensure safety, it is crucial to obtain a G6PD blood test result before administering any dose larger than 10g of Vitamin C. This blood test only needs to be done once in your lifetime.

If you don’t have a G6PD blood test in your medical records, we can conduct the test for you. At the same time, if desired, we can administer a 7.5g dose of Vitamin C. If the test result is normal, further treatment at larger doses can be pursued.

Oral vs IV Vitamin C

Oral Vitamin C

- Limited absorption through the digestive system
- Restricted to lower doses due to digestive tolerance
- Absorption affected by factors like stress, alcohol, and food
- May cause stomach upset at higher doses
- Suitable for general daily maintenance

Intravenous Vitamin C

- 100% absorption directly into the bloodstream
- Higher therapeutic doses possible (up to 100g)
- Bypasses digestive system completely
- No gastrointestinal side effects
- May provide enhanced support for immune function and recovery

What does a Vitamin C IV drip do?

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient and potent antioxidant that supports multiple body functions. Our high-dose IV therapy delivers therapeutic amounts directly into your bloodstream for enhanced bioavailability.

Key benefits may include:

  • Supporting immune system function
  • Protecting cells from oxidative damage
  • Supporting collagen production
  • Aiding wound healing processes
  • Enhancing iron absorption
  • Supporting cellular health and recovery

By bypassing the digestive system, IV delivery allows for higher therapeutic doses than oral supplementation.

How long do the effects of Vitamin C IV therapy last?

Most people feel the positive effects for 3-7 days, with vitamin C levels remaining elevated in the blood for more than 4 hours and potentially up to several weeks. The duration varies based on your metabolism, health status, and how your body utilises the vitamin C.

Are there any side effects from Vitamin C IV therapy?

Vitamin C IV therapy is generally very well tolerated with few side effects. The most common is mild fluid retention from the infusion volume. Rare side effects may include temporary fatigue or kidney stones in individuals with a previous history. All treatments are monitored by qualified medical professionals.

Can I have Vitamin C IV therapy if I'm taking other medications?

Most medications are compatible with Vitamin C IV therapy, but some interactions can occur. During your consultation, our doctors will review all your current medications and health conditions to ensure the treatment is safe and appropriate for you.

Can other vitamins and minerals be added to a Vitamin C IV Drip?

Yes, our doctors can customise your IV drip by adding complementary nutrients such as B vitamins, magnesium, zinc, or glutathione based on your individual health goals. During your consultation, we’ll discuss which combinations might be most beneficial for your specific needs.
