What is Iron Deficiency?

If you’re feeling tired, breathless, foggy, or “not quite yourself,” iron deficiency may be the cause.

Iron helps your body produce red blood cells and deliver oxygen to your tissues. When levels are low, everyday tasks can feel harder than they should. Symptoms often include fatigue, weakness, hair thinning, dizziness, headaches, pale skin, and shortness of breath.

Iron deficiency is common in women, particularly during menstruation or pregnancy, and in those with low intake or absorption issues. Left untreated, it can progress to iron-deficiency anaemia.

At Effect Doctors, our clinicians provide clinically supervised iron infusions to restore levels quickly and safely, helping many patients feel more energised and clear-headed.

Diagnosing and Treating Iron Deficiency

Iron deficiency is diagnosed through blood tests, and the appropriate treatment depends on its severity and underlying cause. It can be managed with dietary changes, oral iron supplements or intravenous (IV) iron therapy.

An IV iron infusion is the most effective way of optimising your iron levels. The Iron Infusion process takes approximately one hour to administer under the supervision of a doctor, and can be given in one of our clinics or at your home or hotel.

You should not receive an iron infusion if you are not iron-deficient, and it is essential to have a blood test to determine if you are suitable. If you already have a recent test, then we may be able to use that to determine your suitability. We have several blood tests available to help indicate whether an Iron Infusion is a suitable option for you:

Iron Deficiency Blood Tests

Rapid Ferritin (Iron) Deficiency Test

This is the quickest and most convenient way of determining if you are iron-deficient. We take a pin prick of blood in the clinic and analyse it using a “point of care” blood analyser. Within 15 minutes, you will have your ferritin level. This test is fast and convenient, but only measures one marker of iron deficiency. Inflammation can raise ferritin levels, so this test is at its most effective with patients who have unambiguous very low iron.

Iron Profile Blood Test

This test provides the most thorough understanding of iron levels in your body. It looks at multiple markers that reveal how well your body is storing, transporting and using iron. It also checks for inflammation in the body which may effect your ferritin results. one of our expert nurses will take a blood sample which is sent to a leading UK laboratory. Results are usually available the next day when one of our Doctors will call you.

The Complete Micronutrient & Iron Deficiency Profile

In addition to everything checked in the Iron Profile Blood Test, this advanced blood test also looks at other reasons you may be experiencing symptoms of low iron. We also test the levels of  B12, B9 (folic acid), Vitamin D, but also minerals: Magnesium, Zinc, Calcium, Potassium, Sodium and Chloride. If the symptoms you are experiencing are not due to iron deficiency, there is a high likelihood they may be due to a deficiency in one of these vitamins and minerals.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the process for booking an appointment?

You can start by contacting our team by phone, email or completing the form on this page. We’ll take a brief health history and ask you to send in any recent blood tests. If you need blood tests, we can arrange these for you. Once results are reviewed and you’re confirmed as eligible, we’ll book you in with one of our Doctors.

Iron infusions are available Monday to Friday, 9:30am–5:30pm at our Soho clinic, and seven days a week at Westfield London.

What is the price of an iron infusion and is the consultation included?

The cost of an iron infusion varies from person to person and depends on:

  • How much iron you need

  • Your weight

  • Whether blood tests are required or already available

A Doctor consultation is included in the price. This consultation involves reviewing your symptoms, medical history and blood results, confirming whether an iron infusion is appropriate, calculating the correct dose, and discussing the risks, benefits and next steps.
Once we’ve spoken with you and reviewed your information, we’ll confirm the most appropriate treatment and provide a clear, personalised price before you proceed.

It is usually between £500 and £895

Who might need an iron infusion and what ferritin level qualifies?

You may benefit from an iron infusion if you have symptoms such as fatigue, breathlessness or brain fog alongside low iron levels, if oral iron has not been effective or tolerated, or if you have ongoing iron loss (for example heavy menstrual bleeding, pregnancy-related deficiency, or certain medical conditions).

A recent blood test is always required and we can provide those. There is no single cut-off ferritin result that applies to everyone, but ferritin levels below around 60 µg/L can be considered for an infusion when symptoms are present. Your clinician will always assess ferritin in context, alongside haemoglobin, symptoms, medical history and underlying causes, before recommending treatment.

Can I have an iron infusion if I’m pregnant?

Iron infusions can be used during pregnancy when clinically indicated. This is assessed carefully on a case-by-case basis and is typically considered from the second trimester onwards. We take gestation, blood results and symptoms into account and, where appropriate, liaise with your maternity team and provide written communication to support safe, coordinated care.

What types of iron do you use?

We use Ferrinject and Ferric Derisomaltose. These are hospital-grade iron formulations that are well tolerated and allow iron to be delivered safely and efficiently. Your Doctor will select the most appropriate preparation based on your individual needs.

How long does the infusion take and when will I feel better?

The infusion itself usually takes 45 minutes to an hour, followed by a short observation period. Many patients notice improvements in energy and symptoms within days to weeks, although full replenishment of iron stores can take longer depending on how low levels were initially.

Is the procedure safe, painful, or associated with side effects?

Most people experience only mild discomfort from the needle insertion, similar to a blood test. Iron infusions are generally safe when prescribed appropriately and administered by a trained Doctor.

Possible side effects are usually mild and temporary and may include headache, flushing, nausea, muscle aches or a metallic taste. Serious reactions are rare, and our team is fully equipped to manage them.

Skin staining is a rare side effect that can occur if iron leaks outside the vein, causing brown discolouration at the injection site. We take multiple precautions to minimise this risk and will always discuss it with you beforehand. We have never had a case of this at Effect Doctors
